Fitted, wall to wall carpeting is very common site in many Western homes, particularly in countries that have a cold or very varied climate, such as the UK. Fitted carpet can be seen in most homes and buildings in the UK and it has been popular for many years. Fitted carpet in the home first became widespread throughout the UK during the Victorian era. Fitted carpet had existed in UK before this time, although it was quite uncommon and usually restricted to very wealthy households.

A wall to wall fitted carpet is a standard floor covering in most homes as it provides comfort, helps to retain heat and gives some limited soundproofing. Although carpet has many benefits for the room in which it is fitted it is also worth mentioning that carpet, particularly thicker carpets, can be difficult to clean and is notorious for harbouring dust mites. It is important to keep carpet clean; this can be done by regularly vacuuming it. It is also a good idea to wash carpet at least once a year as this keeps it clean and helps it to last longer. Specialist carpet shampooing machines can be bought, or hired for this purpose.

Fitting a carpet into a room can be a difficult and time consuming task, particularly for people who are not experienced. Many people who are have bought a new carpet for their home will have it professionally fitted, although some people will opt to do it for themselves.
